icons is a series based on the work of the late painter and our number one fan Lucas Devriendt (1955-2017). Lucas made a foto of a table and painted it, it then becoming an abstract shape. In his words : ‘This shape floats away from the wall, and is a cut-out from a door which I painted black. The idea was to present a door as a table. In a previous study (Tabula Raza, 1988), I had made a photo of a white door presented as a table from a perfect 45 degree angled perspective. This is its anti-image. The perspective is reversed and focusses on the spectator in stead of the horizon. It is a black plane, so your eyes cannot focus on it. The sides are very obviously those of a wooden door, so you can also feel the physicality of the object.’

We applied this way of looking to our work, creating a dialogue with Lucas.
